The characters in my contemporary fantasy story draw inspiration from Ukrainian folklore. Solomiya, often called Solya, embodies the spirit of a Mavka. Legends surrounding these forest creatures suggest they are the souls of children who have passed away. Various types of Mavkas exist, some being benevolent and others quite vicious. In Ukrainian pop culture, Mavkas are often portrayed as young women with green hair who inhabit the forest, acting as fierce protectors of Mother Nature. They are known to be hostile towards anyone who threatens them. Interestingly, some tales describe Mavkas as having transparent backs, revealing their internal organs and suggesting that their backs can serve as portals to other realms.

My Mavka, Solomiya, is a kind-hearted redhead deeply passionate about medicine. She holds a license to access these mystical portals. While she is Halia’s closest friend, she harbors secret feelings for her. Solomiya understands Halia’s struggles with navigating human emotions and is determined to help her overcome a mysterious illness caused by the poison of the Evil Zlydni.
